It is believed that Sri Sai Baba is the reincarnation of Saint Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi, in Maharashtra. Prashanthi Nilayam or The Abode of Peace is the ashram of Sri Sai
Baba, the prime destination of travelers coming to Puttaparthi. This
massive ashram set up by the charismatic guru in 1950 is now a prominent
pilgrimage center for people from all over the world. There are regular
spiritual activities that take place in the ashram. The museum housed
inside the ashram has a collection of models of famous places of worship
from all over the world. There are many temples inside the ashram like
the Ganesh Mandir, Subramanya Mandir, Gayatri Mandir and Satyabhama
temple. The ashram also has stadiums, institutions of learning, the Sai
Space Theatre etc.
Lepakshi, located on the way to Bangalore, is of immense archeological importance and historic significance. There are three famous shrines in Lepakshi dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Virabhadra respectively. The imposing temple dedicated to Virabhadra is a fine example of Vijayanagara architectural style. There are also beautiful sculptures and impressive statues scattered throughout the city. The huge monolithic statue of Nandi at the entrance of the city is one such example.
