- Tuticorin- The Pearl City
The port city of Tuticorin or Thoothukudi, situated down south in the
Gulf of Mannar, is often called the Gateway of Tamil Nadu. The city
famous for its pearl fishing also boasts of a beautiful natural harbor.
The city has played an important part in the maritime history of Tamil
Nadu. Its strategic location has helped it to catapult into a prominent
South Indian port. The harbor of Tuticorin is famous for pearl diving
and fishing. The city had been under the Portuguese, Dutch and finally
under the hands of the British, before it was annexed to the Union of
There are many towns of historic and religious significance in the district. Scores of Roman Catholic churches that dot the skyline bear witness to the Portuguese influence in the region. Tuticorin has many sand-kissed beaches luring tourists. The many handicraft centers in the region sell indigenous handcrafted artifacts at a very reasonable price.

Tiruchendur temple, dedicated to Lord Subramanya, has an exquisite array
of sculptures. The temple is also an important place of pilgrimage.
Pachalankurichi about a distance of 18 km from Tuticorin occupies an
important place in the history of Indias fight against the British
regime. It is here that the famous warrior Veera Pandiya Katta Bomman
put up a strong resistance against the mighty British in the 17th
century. Katta Bomman Memorial fort, constructed by the Government of
Tamil Nadu as a tribute to the legendary warrior Kattabomman, has on
display a variety of relics related to his life. Ettaiyapuram Palace
built during the reign of the Pandyas of Madurai is worth seeing.
The 400 year old basilica of Our Lady of Snows is an imposing structure brimming with antiquity and sacredness. It is one of the important Catholic pilgrimage centers in India. Manapad, a small town along the coastline at a distance of 18 km from Tuticorin, is a stronghold of Roman Catholicism in Tamil Nadu. The Church of the Holy cross here is said to have the fragments of the original cross brought from the holy city of Jerusalem. The church is linked with the life of St. Francis Xavier, the greatest missionary to India after the apostle St. Thomas. Manapad is also known as Chinna Jerusalem (small Jerusalem) because of the innumerable churches that dot the area.
Ottapidaram is the place of birth of the great patriot V.O. Chidambaranar, a prominent figure in Indias struggle for independence. His house has now been converted into a memorial with many interesting artifacts associated with his life put on display.
Korkai, an ancient Pandya port city, attracts many historians and archeologists. Kalakadu Widllife Sanctuary offers fun and adventure to a traveler. Hare Island lying adjacent to the port offers a very good spot for holiday seekers and tourists. Kazhugu Malai is famous for its Jain cave temples and Jain architecture.
